Ethnography citations

This month's issue (#9.1) of the journal Ethnography includes references to my research into the c-word. Jacqueline Z Wilson's article, Pecking Orders: Power Relationships & Gender In Australian Prison Graffiti, cites both my website and my thesis. (Wilson refers to my "MA thesis", though the title she mentions was actually my BA thesis; my MA thesis was unrelated.)

My etymology of a certain word beginning with 'c' has been cited by Sara Gwin in an article for today's issue of The Daily Barometer, a newspaper published by Oregon State Univeristy.

Josephine Baker In Art & Life

My Madonna website has been referenced in the notes and bibliography of a new book by Bennetta Jules-Rosette, titled Josephine Baker In Art & Life: The Icon & The Image. The book explores the creation of Baker's public persona, and analyses its influence on modern culture.

In my online Madonna discography, I discuss the Catholic reaction to the confluence of sex and religion in the Blond Ambition concerts, which Jules-Rosette compares to Baker's world tour of 1929-1930.

We celebrated the new year at Central World in downtown Bangkok, at an event called Hands 2008: Bangkok Countdown. Fortunately, unlike last year, there were no bombs this time. Best wishes to everyone for 2008.

Christmas in the UK

I'm currently in the UK (I arrived yesterday), staying with my parents for Christmas. I'll be back in Bangkok on 29th December.

In 1994, I started seriously collecting films on VHS, but I sold them all in 2004 and began replacing them with DVDs. So, my (very long-term) goal is to buy all of these titles. That is, until I switch to Blu-Ray, and start all over again...

We've moved into our condo now, all our books etc. from the old place have been unpacked, and we've bought all our new furniture.

Advisor of Studies

I was recently promoted to the position of Advisor of Studies at Kaplan. (I've been teaching test-preparation courses at Kaplan since 2005.)

Today we paid the deposit for a new apartment. We'll be able to move in sometime next month. Updates will surely follow soon.

Madge the cat

We now have a cat, a lovely one-year-old female. We've named her Madge, as it's Madonna's nickname. She comes from an animal rescue centre, and we collected her this morning.

office Christmas party

We had our annual Kaplan Christmas party today.

Amazingly, it's quite cold here in Bangkok right now. The usual temperature is somewhere between extraordinarily hot and excruciatingly hot, but for the past few days there's been a constant cool breeze. I have actually shivered several times. It almost feels like Christmas!

My website is now a set text at Utrecht University (in the Netherlands), for a class titled Evil In Art & How To Deal With It (the first class in the Present-Day Practical Philosophy module Art & Evil). The class will be on 31st January.

My nephew, my elder brother-in-law, and I all have birthdays within a few days of each other.

Christmas in England

I'm in the UK for a Christmas holiday, until 3rd January 2006. Have a happy Christmas and new year.

Hungappa article

A two-page article in the current issue of Hungappa, the student magazine of Charles Sturt University (Australia), has been compiled from text and images taken from my website. The article (The C Word) is credited to Rachel (no surname given), and includes my URL as a footnote.
