In Thailand, criticising the monarchy is the most heinous social taboo. King Bhumibol (Rama IX) is revered as an almost literally divine figure, and lese majeste is punishable by up to fifteen years in prison. Any comment intended or construed as anti-monarchy would result in social disgrace and possibly in violent reprisal. Natural devotion to the King, desire to maintain social harmony, and fear of lese majeste ensure that the King remains absolutely immune to criticism.
Websites which could potentially be deemed lese majeste are routinely blocked in Thailand by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, whether or not they have actually been convicted of anything.
